Notes |
- Private, Revolutionary War (1778-1781), 8th Virginia Regiment. Served under Capt. Richard Campbell and Cols. Muhlenburgh and A. Bowman. He engaged in the battle of Brandywine, fought on Brandywine Creek at Chads Ford, PA, Sept 11, 1777 and Germantown October 4, 1777. Discharged at Valley Forge, PA February 9, 1781. Moved from Monroe, Virginia to Hillsboro, Ohio after his wife’s death in 1814.
George W. Spicard, 1758-Feb. 15. 1848, another of the worthy veterans of the Revolution, located his land grant on Fulton Survey No. 7, 232, west of Fairview, on the north side of the trace, now U.S. 50. His claim was allowed in 1824. One son, William, was already married when they arrived in the County. William Spicard passed away at an early date, his wife, Jane, survived until Nov. 28, 1876. Her death occurred at the age of 94. They made their early home in the Stroup settlement in Dodson Twp.
From a biography of John Foster Leaverton:
“My earliest recollection of the sterling old veterans[s]...was at a Fourth of July celebration in Hillsboro. [John Leaverton] and old George Spickard, Adam Shafer and a Mr. Eggleson of Madison always had front seats on the platform. George Spickard and John Foster Leaverton were comrades under Gen. Nathaniel Green, and shared the fortunes of Washington’s ablest general, who held the south against fearful odds, and at last cooped up Cornwallis at Yorktown; the crowning triumph of a brilliant campaign.” [2, 5, 7, 9, 11]
