Lt. Col. Raymond M. Griswold (retired USAF), 88 of Springfield passed away Thursday July 8, 2010 in Heartland of Springfield.
He was born in Pleasant Plains, Ohio on May 16, 1922, the son of Raymond W. and Irma E. (Bisher) Griswold.
Ray served his country in the US Air Force for 27 years as a Pilot, flying an air-sea rescue plane during WWII and Vietnam. He flew in the South Pacific during WW II and was stationed in Morocco, Bermuda, and Amchitka. He also was involved with the H bomb testing at Eniwetok in the Marshall Islands. Following WW II he sailed home on the USS Intrepid.
Ray and his wife were long time members of the Springfield Country Club and the Officer’s Club at WPAFB. He was a member of H S Kissell Lodge#674 F & AM, Scottish Rite Valley of Dayton, Antioch Shrine, Springfield Shrine Club, Kiwanis Club, where he received in conjunction with the Springfield Rotary Club, The Lt Henry A Beckley Award.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents, wife Wanda F. Griswold (Dec 16, 2009), and an infant brother.
His survivors include his brother and sister in law Dale & Mary Sue Griswold of Cincinnati; sister in law Vera Lambert of Springfield; nieces and nephews Mike Griswold, Kathy Mercurio, Lori Klug, Gretchen Goode, Nannette Lambert, Heidi Kirkpatrick, and Gregg Lambert; several great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to Heartland of Springfield and Crossroads Hospice and their staffs for the wonderful care and support.
Visitation will be Sunday from 1-3 PM in the RICHARDS, RAFF & DUNBAR MEMORIAL HOME with Masonic services at 3:00 PM. Services will be Monday at 11:00 AM in the memorial home with Rev. Paul Price officiating.
Burial with full military honors will be at Ferncliff Cemetery.
