- Reared in the Established Church of England in Albury, Hertfordshire, John was drawn the to teachings of George Fox and became a Quaker. He was persecuted in England for his beliefs and imprisoned. In the Spring of 1677 two hundred and thirty Quakers came to New Jersey in the Americas - among them was John Shinn. He settled on Birch Creek in a log house (called "Springfield Lodge") near Burlington, New Jersey.
