Notes |
- George & Delilah live next door to Jonathan and Molly Ruse (who run a hotel in Lynchburg) in 1880. (Molly is Delilah's sister) Delilah lives with her youngest daughter, Elva, in New Vienna from 1910 and then in Cincinnati until her death.
Research:
Delilah almost certainly belongs to Levi and Rachael Morseman. There are no other likely candidates in the US in the 1850 and 1860 censuses. Her brother, Jonathan, vouched for her at her marriage (although, perhaps it may have been her brother-IN-LAW, Jonathan Ruse). No Jonathan Morseman is listed in the censuses for Levi’s family - but, then, there are no Jonathan Morsmans to be found in the censuses anyway.
Her death certificate lists her father's name as "Sylvester Morsman". There is only one Sylvester Morseman in the 1850 and 1860 censuses, and he has no children named Delilah. He lived near Levi in 1850 and moved to Illinois shortly thereafter. A newspaper story in the 1886 Highland Weekly News reports “Mr. Mossman and wife, who went to Illinois forty years ago, returned on Saturday on a visit to his sisters, Mrs. J. Ruse [Mollie Morsman Ruse] and Mrs. George Bishir [Delilah Morsman Bishir].”
Brown Co. is quite close to Highland Co. and in 1860, in Brown Co., there is a Delilah Morsman (age 11) living with Levi’s widow, Rachael (age 54), and Mary (age 8). This would appear to clinch it.
Alternate spellings: Morseman, Mossman.
