Excerpts regarding the Pitzers of Highland Co., Ohio

  • Notes
    • From Elsie Johnson Ayres' book, Highland Pioneer Sketches and Family Genealogies:

John and Michael Pitzer, brothers, arrived in America from Baden, Germany, in 1770. They settled on a farm in Berkeley Co., Va. John became the father of ten children and Michael the father of 24. A son, John, was born to John Pitzer, the immigrant, in January, 1777. He had two sons by his marriage to Elizabeth Pifer. Born in 1780, she died in Highland Co., Sept. 2, 1853, he survived until Jan. 5, 1857. The sons born of the first marriage were Matthias and Jacob Pitzer. The latter, Jacob, born Aug. 19, 1800--Jan. 6, 1886, married Catharine Speagh, June 11, 1801-Dec. 13, 1888. She was the daughter of Lewis Speagh, who was the father of ten other children. The Speaghs emigrated to Licking Co. where they lived on a farm north of Lynchburg until his death at the age of 93, Oct. 26, 1855.

John and Elizabeth (Pifer) Pitzer, their son, Jacob, his wife and year old daughter, John's brother, Michael, his wife, Mary, and other members of the Pitzer family, left their Virginia home in Sept., 1825, for a new home on the "western frontier." There were 20 people in the party. Traveling through Wheeling, in Virginia, to Columbus, Ohio, they finally arrived in Dodson Twp. Their first cabin home was on the east bank of the East Fork of the Little Miami River, north of Lynchburg. The Pitzers were avid Abolitionists and never lost a chance to help the cause.

Michael Pitzer, 1778-Oct. 9, 1860, and his wife, Mary, 1793-Mar. 13, 1859, settled near John Pitzer in the northern part of Dodson Twp. John A. Pitzer, born in 1817, was one of the first in the family to pass away. His death occurred Dec. 16, 1850. After the death of Elizabeth, wife of John Pitzer in 1853, he remarried and became the father of three children who were Rachael, Adam, and Andrew Pitzer.

      3. From "Highland Pioneer Sketches and Family Genealogies" by Elsie Johnson Ayres, pg. 583-4:
John (this should be Matthias, CH) and Michael Pitzer, brothers, arrived in America from Baden, Germany, in 1770 (they actually arrived in 1752 and were from Wurtemburg - see information under Matthias Bitzer). They settled on a farm in Berkeley Co., Va. John (Mathias) became the father of ten children and Michael the father of 24. A son, John, was born to John Pitzer (Mathias), the immigrant, in January 1777 (my records say Dec 1777). He had two sons by his marriage to Elizabeth Pifer. Born in 1780, she died in Highland Co., Sept. 2, 1853, he survived until Jan. 5, 1857. The sons born of the first marriage were Matthias and Jacob Pitzer.
John and Elizabeth (Pifer) Pitzer, their son Jacob, his wife and year old daughter, John's brother Michael, his wife Mary, and other members of the Pitzer family left their Virginia home in Sept. 1825 for a new home on the "western frontier". There were 20 people in the party. Travelling through Wheeling in Virginia to Columbus, Ohio, they finally arrived in Dodson Twp. Their first cabin home was on the east bank of the East Fork of the Little Miami River, north of Lychburg. The Pitzers were avid Abolitionists and never lost a chance to help the cause.
